Dr Jerry Tan graduated as a medical doctor from the National University of Singapore in 1981. He obtained his higher degree in ophthalmology from the University of Edinburgh in 1986. He worked at the Singapore General Hospital, Singapore National Eye Centre and Tan Tock Seng Hospital until 1995 as a consultant in ophthalmology (eye surgery). During his tenure in government service, he was awarded 2 scholarships for overseas training in ophthalmology. He was trained at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England and at the California Pacific Medical Centre in San Francisco, USA. Dr Tan left for private practice in 1995 and has been working at the Camden Medical Centre to date running his private practice, Jerry Tan Eye Surgery. He is the pioneer in phacoemulsification in cataract surgery and LASIK surgery. Dr Tan has 30 years of experience in ophthalmology with expertise in refractive surgery, cornea and external eye disease. He also has a busy comprehensive ophthalmology practice. He is a consultant for international imaging and laser companies. He has published journal articles in renowned ophthalmic journals as well as cataract and refractive surgery reference books.
Dr Tan has been a volunteer at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) since 1997. To help this wonderful organization obtain charitable funds for their projects for the visually handicapped, he decided to write a book to increase awareness on the importance of the effect of nutrition on the health of the eye. He has donated all profits of this book to SAVH and has raised $75,338.00 to date.
